Mi trabajo se centra en evaluar las consecuencias biológicas de los cambios ambientales en animales silvestres. Mi investigación tiene un enfoque interdisciplinar, incluyendo estudios de eco-fisiología, parasitología, ecología de poblaciones, conservación, genética y ecología del comportamiento.

A nivel de individuos, estudio los factores (recursos alimentarios, contaminantes, hormonas, factores estresantes) que limitan el estado de salud (enfermedades, parásitos, respuestas inmunes, estrés), la reproducción (inversión en señales sexuales, éxito reproductor) y la supervivencia. A nivel de poblaciones, trato de entender las variaciones espaciales y temporales en abundancia de animales. Muchos factores, como los recursos, depredadores, patógenos y las actividades humanas influyen en la dinámica poblacional. Mi investigación trata de determinar la importancia relativa de estos factores.

Estoy interesado en entender cómo la variabilidad ambiental afecta la eficacia biológica, y por último, la demografía y dinámica de poblaciones. Considero tanto la variabilidad ambiental natural (interacciones hospedadores-parásitos o presas-depredadores) como la debida a actividades humanas (agricultura, cambios de usos de suelo, caza, contaminación).

Mi investigación está basada en estudios en condiciones naturales y en experimentos a nivel de individuos y de poblaciones, y tiene un componente tanto básico como aplicado. De manera última, pretendo contribuir a desarrollar bases científicas que ayuden a la conservación de las especies, el desarrollo de estrategias de uso sostenible de los recursos naturales, y la resolución de conflictos entre actividades humanas y conservación de la biodiversidad.

Estos objetivos generales se pueden precisar con los siguientes ejemplos o casos de estudio:

  • Importancia relativa de factores extrínsecos (interacciones tróficas) e intrínsecos (comportamiento) en la regulación de poblaciones (estudios sobre lagópodo escocés, topillo campesino y rapaces);
  • Efectos de la agricultura, la caza y los contaminantes sobre fisiología, comportamiento, reproducción y dinámica poblacional de aves agrícolas;
  • Ecología, gestión y conservación de la perdiz roja y otras aves esteparias (ganga, ortega, sison…);
  • Factores que explican la expansión geográfica y las plagas de topillos en el NO de España donde están asociadas a daños a cultivos y brotes de tularemia en humanos. Se trata de buscar mejoras en las herramientas de predicción y gestion de las plagas con el fin de minimizar los efectos en la salud pública y los conflictos entre agricultura y conservación de la biodiversidad.
  • Caracterización del ciclo ecológico y de la epidemiologia de una zoonosis (re-)emergente: la tularemia en el NO de España.

Soy autor de 158 publicaciones, de las cuales 120 son artículos en revistas SCI (como Nature, Science, Trends in Ecology & Evolution, Ecology Letters, Conservation Letters, Environmental Sciences and Technology, Molecular Ecology, Proceedings-B, American Naturalist, Journal of Animal Ecology, Functional Ecology, Plos One, Biology Letters…), con un indice H de 30 (scopus, Sept. 2016).
