Current Research Interests: Infectious diseases. Molecular biology of host-vector-pathogen interactions, gene regulation, pathogenesis, functional genomics, evolution and immunology. Systems biology. Ticks and tick-borne diseases. Intracellular bacteria (Rickettsia, Mycobacterium). Vaccinology. Biotechnology.

Innovation in education: Teach a post-graduate course on Molecular Biology of the host-vector-pathogen interactions and vaccine development as part of the Masters degree at the University of Castilla – La Mancha, Spain. Developed and taught several courses and developed research programs at institutions in Cuba, USA, Mexico and Spain.

Mentoring of students: Currently, mentoring 5 Ph.D. students. Total Ph.D. thesis supervised: 21.

Service: Serving as committee chair for 5 Ph.D. students. Served as committee chair and member for several Masters and Ph.D. students. Associate Editor for Ticks and Tick Borne Diseases (2009-present) and Experimental and Applied Acarology (2005-present). Serve as external reviewer for several journals. Member of The Society for Tropical Veterinary Medicine (2007-present). Member of the Council of 100 for Vaccine.
