Decalogue on the control of wild boar populations

The variety of boars (Sus scrofa) are the wild reservoirs of the virus African swine fever (ASF) in Europe, and its overabundance is becoming more noticeable. An effective wild boar population management strategy is necessary not only to stop the transmission of ASF to pigs, but also because of the negative consequences of the species on the environment, agriculture, the abundance of other species (some of them interest for conservation) and in the urban population centers where it is already present.

For this reason, representatives of the Institute for Research in Hunting Resources (IREC - CSIC, UCLM, JCCM), together with the rest of the partners of the Supraautonomous Operational Group for the Prevention of African Swine Fever in Spain (PREVPA), members of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food of Spain and other organizations linked to the hunting sector, have prepared a manual with ten key measures for the sustainable control of wild boar populations.

The publication of the manual, which can be consulted and downloaded in PDF format, has been financed by the project «Overabundance: Innovation in biosecurity and wild boar control to prevent African Swine Fever» Developed by GO PREVPA.
