Mateo Soria, Rafael

Rafael Mateo (Barcelona, ​​1968) Graduated in Veterinary Medicine by the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) in 1991. He worked as Assistant Professor at the UAB between 1993 and 2003, teaching Toxicology subjects in Veterinary and Food Technology degrees, a period in which he also began his research activity in the field of Wildlife Toxicology. In 1999 he obtained the degree of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, and from that time until 2003 he made research stays contract in the Patuxent Wildlife Research Center (US Geological Survey, Maryland), Department of Plant and Soil Science (University of Aberdeen, UK) y la Doñana biological station (Higher Council for Scientific Research - CSIC, Spain).

Since 2003 it is Associate Professor from the University of Castilla-La Mancha (UCLM), assigned as a researcher to Instituto de Investigación en Recursos Cinegéticos (IREC – CSIC, UCLM, JCCM). At UCLM he teaches the subject of Toxicology at the Master's degree in Basic and Applied Research Hunting Resources and participates in two other subjects of the Master's Degree in Environmental Sustainability in Local and Territorial Development and in the Master's Degree in Zoonosis and One Health (One Health) of the Autonomous University of Barcelona. He has been deputy director of IREC between 2008-2010, acting director between 2010-2011 and He currently has the position of director since June 2015.

Rafael Mateo leads the Research Group in Wildlife Toxicologywhose lines of investigation incluyen el estudio del efecto de las sustancias tóxicas de origen diverso en la fauna silvestre y las implicaciones que esto puede tener en Salud Pública dentro del marco de la seguridad alimentaria. Los proyectos más recientes han estado dirigidos a estudiar (1) el impacto en la fauna silvestre y el ganado de la contaminación por metales pesados en zonas con actividad minera; (2) la intoxicación por plomo en aves originada por la munición de caza, sus implicaciones en seguridad alimentaria y las medidas que pueden reducir estos riesgos; (3) el efecto de plaguicidas en uso, principalmente insecticidas y rodenticidas, en especies de fauna silvestre de ambientes agrícolas; y (4) la ecología del botulismo en los humedales temporales de la zona Mediterránea. También directs the IREC Toxicological Analysis Service, in which they provide analytical coverage through research contracts to various Spanish Autonomous Communities and researchers from other universities and research centers.

Rafael Mateo has published more than 150 items in journals indexed in JCR, 1 book, 15 book chapters, 16 articles in non-indexed magazines, 17 scientific dissemination works and has presented more than 120 communications at conferences. He has directed 8 doctoral theses, 11 master's theses, 8 advanced study diplomas and 6 final degree projects. His h-index is 30 with more than 2,600 citations. Elected member of the magazine Editorial Committee Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry for the 2014-2016 period.
