raphael matthew (Barcelona, ​​1968) is graduated in Veterinary from the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) in 1991. He worked as Assistant Professor at the UAB between 1993 and 2003, teaching Toxicology subjects in the Veterinary Medicine and Food Technology degrees, a period in which he also began his research activity in the field of Wildlife Toxicology. In 1999 he obtained the degree of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, and from that moment until 2003 he carried out research stays in the Patuxent Wildlife Research Center (US Geological Survey, Maryland), Department of Plant and Soil Science (University of Aberdeen, UK) and the Doñana Biological Station (Higher Council for Scientific Research – CSIC, Spain).

Since 2003 is Associate Professor from the University of Castilla-La Mancha (UCLM), attached as a researcher to the Instituto de Investigación en Recursos Cinegéticos (IREC – CSIC, UCLM, JCCM). At the UCLM he teaches the subject of Toxicology in the Master's Degree in Basic and Applied Research in Hunting Resources and participates in two other subjects of the Master's Degree in Environmental Sustainability in Local and Territorial Development and in the Master's Degree in Zoonoses and One Health (One Health) of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. He has been deputy director of IREC between 2008-2010, acting director between 2010-2011 and currently has the position of director since June 2015.

raphael matthew leads the Research Group in Wildlife Toxicologywhose lines of investigation They include the study of the effect of toxic substances of diverse origin on wildlife and the implications that this may have on Public Health within the framework of food safety. The most recent projects have been aimed at studying (1) the impact on wildlife and livestock of heavy metal contamination in areas with mining activity; (2) lead poisoning in birds from hunting ammunition, its implications for food safety, and measures that can reduce these risks; (3) the effect of pesticides in use, mainly insecticides and rodenticides, on wildlife species in agricultural environments; and (4) the ecology of botulism in temporary wetlands in the Mediterranean area. Also directs the IREC Toxicological Analysis Service, in which they provide analytical coverage through research contracts to various Spanish Autonomous Communities and researchers from other universities and research centers.

Rafael Mateo posted more than 150 articles in journals indexed in JCR, 1 book, 15 book chapters, 16 articles in non-indexed journals, 17 popular science papers and has presented more than 120 communications in congresses. has directed 8 doctoral theses, 11 master's theses, 8 advanced study diplomas and 6 final projects. His h-index is 30 with more than 2600 citations. Elected member of the Editorial Committee of the magazine Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry for the 2014-2016 period.
