Hunters from Salamanca collaborate with the IREC in the fight against the Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus

The Salamanca Delegation of the Federación de Caza de Castilla y León collaborates with the IREC in the collection of samples whose analysis will allow elaborating an epidemiological map of the Crimean-Congo virus disease in the province

After the recent cases of Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever detected in humans in the province of Salamanca, the Salamanca Delegation of the Federación de Caza de Castilla y León contacted with the Research Group in Health and Biotechnology (SaBio) of the Instituto de Investigación en Recursos Cinegéticos (IREC – CSIC, UCLM, JCCM) to find out how hunters could collaborate in the studies that are being carried out on the transmission of this virus between wildlife and humans.

The Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever virus is a tick-borne pathogen that, in its different stages of development, it changes of host, being able to infect humans, especially in areas where wildlife and livestock share the ecosystem. This zoonotic disease causes severe outbreaks of viral haemorrhagic fever, with a fatality rate that can be as high as 40%. It is currently considered an emerging disease in some European countries, including Spain.

the IREC researchers made available to the Salamanca hunters the necessary material for the collection of samples.

From the outset, the IREC researchers made available to the Salamanca hunters the necessary material for the collection of samples, mainly taking advantage of collective hunts, for their subsequent transfer to the laboratories of the center for analysis. The results of these analyzes will make it possible to develop an epidemiological map of the virus, which will serve as a basis for establishing “One Health” management strategies for its control and eradication.

From the Salamanca Delegation of the Federación de Caza de Castilla y León, the call to collaboration is extended to other hunting provincial delegations and autonomous federations. Those interested may contact the Salamanca Delegation of the Federación de Caza de Castilla y León or the SaBio Group of the IREC.
