Pallid harrier (Circus macrourus) breeds in Spain for first time

Aguilucho papialbo
In June 2019, IREC participated in the discovery of a pallid harrier (Circus macrourus) nest in the province of Palencia, during a period of high abundance of common voles. This finding constitutes the first evidence of breeding of this species in Spain. The nest contained two chicks, one of which successfully fledged mid-June. Remarkably, the breeding female had a ring that identified her as one of the four young that fledged from the first pallid harrier pair that bred in the Netherlands (and Western Europe) in 2017.
